June Sybil Greer was born in Riverside, California on July 23, 1927, two months and two days after Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic.She was the first-born child of Carr Greer and Margaret Meikle. Her sister and two brothers followed in short order as her father found employment with the Santa Fe Railroad and the family moved to homes in Arizona and New Mexico, following the development of the railroad. They then moved to Provo in 1942, where June’s father became the chief of construction for BYU and the Provo Temple. The family had settled down in Utah Valley for good.June graduated from BY High School and then attended BYU, spending her formative years at her home less than a block south of campus. She worked at the BYU Press and was very active in campus activities. At school she met Douglas Brown from Springville. Doug had landed with the U.S. troops in Normandy in 1944 and was a decorated veteran. They courted for a year and a half and were married in the Salt Lake temple in April 1949.Their oldest child Bruce was born a year later and, in an unusual twist, June’s mother gave birth to June’s baby brother two years later. This meant that Bruce had an uncle two years his junior.Doug had a master’s degree in bacteriology as was selected to join a BYU group helping the country of Iran recover from the destruction of World War II. The young family set off for a life in a strange land, but with many familiar friends from BYU who had also received a similar assignment. In the small fishing village of Babolsar, Iran on (no kidding!) the kitchen table, June gave birth to her second child, a girl they named Denise. Adding to the unusual aspect of the event, Denise was born on Bruce’s third birthday! Denise became a U.S. citizen when she turned 18, but she did have the choice.No sooner had they returned stateside than Doug landed a position with the U.S. State Department and was assigned to Benghazi, Libya. (Yes, THAT Libya!) June was pregnant with her third and he was scheduled to be born in Libya, but the doctor at home in Provo advised waiting. Burke, now a familiar figure in the halls of Jamestown as he checks in on his mom, was born in Provo immediately before the family move. Family and many friends now know him as Wiggy.June showed herself to be very adaptable to foreign adventure, keeping house, raising children, even directing the activities of a gardener, a maid and houseboy. She and Doug thrived and after two years were transferred to Libya’s other main city, Tripoli. The difference was that Tripoli had Wheelus Field, an American Air Force base with many (OK, some) of the comforts of home.Living in this part of the world and having access to free military transportation, the family was able to travel throughout Europe, including the Swiss Temple dedication in 1955 and the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958.

After coming back to the U.S. for the final time, Doug received a scholarship for an advanced degree at the University of California at Berkeley and their last child, Boyd, was born there. Doug’s work in public health in the Middle East, in California and for the State of Utah was ended early when his Multiple Sclerosis forced him into early retirement. June picked up the slack, received her teaching degree and became the family bread-winner as a teacher.First at Payson High School and then for over 20 years at Utah Technical College (now UVU) she gained a reputation as someone students loved to learn from. To this very day she encounters former students who remember her classes fondly. She initiated the Business English program there and was a major force in helping this technical school attain university status. June represented the school as faculty advisor when her student competed successfully in professional development contests in Utah and throughout the U.S. Her well-trained team regularly dominated these events.June didn’t only travel professionally, but also with a close group of friends from high school. Although they lived in different states, they met regularly for holidays in various locations including Oregon, New York, Japan, Australia and Europe. All told, June has visited over 40 states and more than 20 countries.MS took Doug from June in 1973, but she soldiered on, sending a son on a mission and helping all four children with their schooling. June is today the grandmother of sixteen and great-grandmother of eighteen. Naturally, they don’t all visit often enough, but she loves her friends and the staff here at Jamestown.

Maxine Tyler Constable

Maxine Tyler Constable was born in Prosser, Washington, on November 14, 1919, the seventh of twelve children of Walter Ellsworth Tyler and Minnie Frances Roylance. Walter, besides being a talented band musician, was a newspaper publisher and printer. Minnie was born and raised in Springville, Utah, a descendant of early LDS settlers. Her grandmother’s family had come from England in 1856 and joined the Martin Handcart Company to unite with the Saints in Utah. Minnie’s grandmother suffered terrible hardships, including the death of her husband and baby on the same day while being trapped in winter snows during the journey.

In 1933 during the Great Depression, Maxine’s family moved to Napa, California, where her beloved mother passed away three years later. Maxine was only 16, and the family lost their father the following year. The children split up, and the five younger ones went to live with the older, married ones in Washington. Maxine had been living with and working as a nanny for a neighboring family since the age of 15, so she decided to stay in Napa to finish high school. After graduation she attended secretarial school and was working as a bookkeeper at the Calif. Veterans Home in nearby Yountville when her girlfriend introduced her to the nephew of her sister’s husband. He was a handsome young man named Harold Constable. After a year of courtship, Harold and Maxine married in 1940.

They made their home in Napa where they raised three daughters. Harold began a machinist apprenticeship at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo and Maxine continued working at the Veterans Home until 1942, when their first daughter, Carole, was born. When World War II began, Harold received deferments due to defense work, but was called into the army and sent to Europe in 1944. A month before his induction, he was baptized into the LDS Church. After his discharge in 1946, he went back to work at Mare Island and built a home for the family in his spare time. Their daughter Leslie was born in 1947, and in 1950 their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Their youngest daughter Sara was born in 1951.

Harold and Maxine became very active in the Church, including being Stake Missionaries. While raising their girls, Maxine worked in Relief Society: as President, on the Stake Board, and teaching a literature class. She got the family history “bug” in 1958 and started work with the Genealogy Committee. Family research became a lifelong joy for her. She returned to work as a part-time bookkeeper in a department store in 1961, then began working at Napa State Hospital in the medical records department in 1965. Meanwhile Harold had several promotions at Mare Island and became an “Analyst and Scheduler,” overseeing work on nuclear submarines. They both retired in 1970, moving to a desert mobile home retirement community in Apache Junction, Arizona near Maxine’s sister and husband. During their five years there, they bought a rustic 1920’s Sierra Mountain cabin from relatives for a summer home. It was located in a unique setting 20 miles west of South Lake Tahoe in the El Dorado National Forest. Hidden on the side of a mountain canyon overlooking a roaring American River and next to a creek-side waterfall, it was a place of tranquility and spiritual renewal. The couple enjoyed hosting friends and relatives there for many years.

In 1976 Harold and Maxine moved back to northern California and Harold built a house of their own design in the Sierra foothills near Placerville. While there, they went on a full-time mission to St. Louis, Missouri, which was an inspiring experience. They also worked side-by-side in the LDS Spanish Extraction Program, combing through microfiche for genealogical information. In 1988 Maxine compiled heirloom photos, life stories and other written documents of her family history. With computer help from daughter Sara, she self-published a hardbound book, “Our Tyler Heritage,” for family.

After 18 years in Placerville, Harold and Maxine moved back to Napa to be near daughter Carole and husband. Carole’s husband passed away in 2006, and with Harold’s health failing, all three moved to Provo to be near Carole’s two daughters and their families. Harold and Maxine moved into the Courtyard in 2007. After 68 years of marriage, Harold passed away in 2008.

Maxine has enjoyed her life at the Courtyard, making friends and attending lectures, concerts, and dance programs. She has also enjoyed great food! She has given two family history research presentations here, and throughout her life, she has inspired many others to record their own life-stories. She is proud to have encouraged her daughters’ talents in art and dance as well as their educational pursuits. She is also proud of her four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Quite a family history yet to unfold!

NORMA COCHRAN

Norma Marie Cochran was born to Thyra Elizabeth Jensen and Andrew Martin Anderson on November 1, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her mother emigrated from Aarhus Denmark, and her father, of Swedish decent, was born in Brigham City, Utah, serving a mission in Denmark where he met Thyra. Norma is one of nine children, she and her brother, Jay, still living. Norma’s married life was full of trials and tribulations, but she rose above those difficult times. She raised her three girls and one boy basically on her own. They moved to California in the Bay Area from Utah, where she found a job to support herself and provide for her children. She remarried, moving to Paradise, California and then was widowed and then was free to attend church and prepare herself to receive her endowment in the Oakland, California temple. Eight years later she met her prince charming, Grover Cleveland Cochran.
Norma’s father, Andrew graduated from BYU in music, however, he could not support the nine children on a teacher’s salary, so he worked as a custodian at several of the Institutes of Religion at a higher wage. She had four sisters and four brothers. Their family was somewhat poor, but never went hungry, as her mother would bake bread every day. She had but one dress to wear to school, about which she felt embarrassed. They had few earthly possessions but Norma was richly blessed with an elect mind and spirit. Her loving and gentle nature has brought comfort and peace to those she has cared for, loved, and encouraged.
Norma’s energy and vigor has afforded her opportunities for service during her lifetime, even in her 80’s, to minister to the less fortunate and visit the homes of the needy. She became famous for her potato salad, ribbon mold, turkey dressing, and English toffee. Her family has benefited from her example of Godlike love of service and her testimony and faith is magnified in the lives of her posterity. One of her granddaughters, Lena, said, “Grandma gives all of herself to those she loves. She was like a second mother to me and she is a great example of selfless service to others.” Norma has loved her grandchildren and been a part of their lives in love and in spirit for those also she hasn’t had the opportunity to live close by.
The Christmas of 2005, Norma came to Utah to visit her daughters and son, and was lined up on a blind date with Grover, who immediately saw that she was the one he had prayed about to fill his life with companionship and love and to be sealed to in the temple. Their courtship is on a different record, but worth hearing about again. When Grover went to pick up Norma on their first date, she opened the door and the sun was shining, illuminating her beautiful countenance and he handed her a box of See’s candy and kissed her on the lips! That was the beginning of a wonderful romance on December 23, 2005, and they were married and sealed in the Mount Timpanogos LDS temple on January 14, 2006! They celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary this (2011) year. The last five years have been the happiest time of Norma’s life, “We love each other more each day,” says Grover, and he continues, “We love spending time together and taking care of each other.” Norma continues her life of serving and taking care of the man of her dreams! Grover and Norma are devoted to and anxiously concerned about each other’s happiness and wellbeing, as President Hinckley defined as romance!
Norma’s life has become an Emblem of Goodness, as her Patriarchal Blessing prophesied and her children and all who know her call her “Blessed.”

A Brief Life Sketch of Grover Cochran

On the eve of World War II, Grover Cochran proposed to his sweetheart. Under a snowy Montana night sky, on Christmas Eve, he asked her to spend the rest of her life with him, but warned her they could not be married until he could find a new job. That night, having faith in her future husband, his sweetheart pulled an empty canning jar off her mother’s kitchen shelf and started saving pennies. On August 25, 1941, Grover’s acceptance letter arrived from the United States Border Patrol. He was thrilled. But his excitement quickly turned into panic when the first set of many orders fell out of the envelope: Grover was to report to his post on the Mexican boarder in just ten days.

Grover jumped into his blue 1939 Model A Roadster, drove to his sweetheart’s home, and showed her his orders. She laughed and ran to get their savings jar! Together, they drove to the courthouse in Missoula, Montana, poured the bottle’s contents out onto the counter, and to the clerk’s chagrin, bought their marriage license with two hundred pennies.

Within the next five days, Grover traded in his Roadster for a 1936 Ford Coupe, helped with all of their wedding plans including helping cook the refreshments for the reception, packed to move, helped finish the construction of his future in-law’s new ranch house where their marriage would be held, and helped clean up the construction mess just in time for the ceremony, while the mop stood dripping outside the kitchen’s back door.

After a one-night honeymoon in a Kalispell boarding house, they packed up their little car and set out on the road for their new life, and El Paso, Texas.

At the southern end of the long Missoula Valley, where the Bitterroot Mountains and Sapphire Range combine, they pulled off the road and stopped in the shade of a large pine tree. His sweetheart spread out a blanket and a picnic lunch including their savings jar, now full of cold spring water. After she said a blessing, they sat quietly eating, and gazing out over their distant valley home.

On their 50th Anniversary, his sweetheart recorded, “As we sat there, Grover became quite emotional. He suddenly realized that he would be the one person completely responsible for our welfare. He saw what a wonderful father he had, and doubted he could ever be a man as good as his dad. He wondered if he should be dragging us away from our beautiful valley, our friends and families, or out into the great unknown. But, we held each other, and swore we would never turn back! After fifty wonderful years, I have to say… Grover has not only followed in his father’s footsteps, but he has forged ahead with his own example of how a man should treat his wife and children. We are truly blessed to have him leading our way— all of us!”

In today’s world filled with uncertainty and danger, Grover’s selfless example of courage, honesty, integrity, compassion, forgiveness, and marital devotion stands as an ensign to our family, encouraging us on our way.

HELEN RAYMOND CARLSON

Helen Carlson was born on October 22, 1917. She was adopted by her maternal aunt, Kathryn Raymond and her husband, Robert. Helen was the oldest of five children who grew up during the depression. The depression taught Helen to be very frugal in her ways and gave her the ability to survive in the world no matter how hard the times. Helen’s mother was not physically well so, as the oldest child, she was a big help in taking care of her younger brothers and sisters. Helen always liked to have fun and to laugh and her brothers and sisters were all comedians. No matter how hard the times, her family was always filled with laughter.
Helen started her own family when she married Herbert Carlson in 1938. They bought their first home right across the street from Herbert’s parents, and that is where they lived when their first child, Celeste, was born. During the Second World War, they moved to Superior, Wisconsin where Herbert worked in the ship yards building battle ships. Their second little girl, Kathryn, was born in Superior, Wisconsin. After the War, they moved back to Minneapolis and Herbert became a contractor and started building homes. Helen and Herb settled down in the first house that he built. That is where their third child, Herb Jr., joined their little family.
Helen and Herb’s marriage ended in 1954 and Helen found herself on her own with three young children to support. She became employed by General Mills in Minneapolis. She worked there until she retired and remained in Minneapolis doing volunteer work for the VFW, the American Legion, the Veteran’s Hospital and the Servicemen’s Center at the Minneapolis Airport. She won many awards for volunteering hundreds of hours of service.
Helen is a person of many accomplishments. She has reached out to assist her family by welcoming family members into her home in times of need, assisting in raising nieces orphaned by her sisters’ deaths, and being a good friend and neighbor. She was a “single mom” in both word and deed. Without any help from a husband, she raised a wonderful family and a righteous posterity of 3 children, 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Helen prepared her children to be faithful Latter-Day Saints by teaching them to pray, reading Bible stories to them and sending them to any church that was close by. In teaching her children that all churches have value, and to love their Heavenly Father, she prepared them to recognize and accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ when they heard it. She also taught her children to be industrious, to value education, to be productive members of the community, and to live lives filled with laughter and joy.
Helen lived in her home in Minneapolis, Minnesota for 50 years. It was hard for her to make the decision to leave her home. One night she had a visitor that helped her make that decision. It was a big raccoon. Helen stayed in her back bedroom, with the door closed, and spent a frightening night of listening to that animal wreck her living room. He came down the chimney, knocked over the lamps and coffee table in front of the chimney, climbed up her curtains and, with his bouncing calisthenics, put sooty paw prints all over the ceiling. He sat in her recliner and, carefully unwrapping each peace of candy and throwing the wrappers all over the living room floor, emptied her candy dish. Helen said, “I’m sure that, if he could have found the remote, he probably would have watched some TV.”
In the fall of 2006, Helen left her home and Minneapolis. It was the hardest thing she ever had to do and it took a lot of courage to make that decision. She now lives at Jamestown, close enough to her children and grandchildren so that she can be with all of them frequently. Helen is honored and respected by her children. She is their “rock.” She is the person on whom they have always been able to count to give them the love and support that they need. She is their most enthusiastic cheerleader. To her posterity, Helen is a hero.

Frances Smart was born in Arkansas in 1924. She grew up on a farm. She got married at 17 and her husband, Boyd, went overseas to fight in the South Pacific. She lived in Florida and worked on airplanes like Rosie the Riveter. After the war she had two children, Dianna and Gary. She has outlived four husbands, all good men.
At age 30 she moved to California and became a Mormon. She stopped drinking, smoking, and cursing like a sailor. She became hyperactive at church with meetings, genealogy, service projects and missionary work. She devoted all her life to these pursuits.
She also went to adult school and graduated from High School at 65! She painted beautiful oil paintings for her family. Frances has always been a happy, beautiful lady with many friends. Her favorite pastimes were cooking for friends and family and going dancing.
She has been the world’s best mother and grandmother. Now she gets very excited to meet her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and quickly forgets their names and faces. Her life has spanned the most amazing progress in world history—from her picking cotton in the south to her jet flights on European vacations.
Frances has lived at Courtyard since the beginning of January. We have loved getting to know her quick sense of humor, easy going nature, and sweet spirit.

Helen Louise Ruffner

Helen Louise Donald Ruffner was born in Duluth, Minnesota on October 10th, 1920. Her parents were Alex and Jenny Donald. Alex was a native of Duluth and Jenny immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island from Denmark when she was 18. Helen has one younger sister named Ruby. When Helen was six years old the family moved to the L.A. area thus trading the cold & freezing weather of Minnesota for the beautiful weather of Southern California. They lived in Culver City. When she was young she enjoyed playing just about any sport. She also became quite good at playing the violin. She graduated from Venice High School in 1939.

After graduating from high school she started working for the telephone company. It wasn’t long before World War II interrupted everybody’s life. Not long after the war started she met a young Navy serviceman named Willis Ruffner and they were married in June of 1943. Soon after the marriage he shipped out to the Pacific area of the war. During his absence she moved back in with her parents in their home in Culver City and nine months later her first son, Bill, was born. Almost two and a half years later Willis returned as the war in the Pacific ended.

Willis had been trained in the navy as an accountant and pursued schooling in that area after the war. He became a Certified Public Accountant. In 1948 they bought and moved into a new home in Downey, California and soon another son, Paul, joined the family. In 1953, Janet was born thus completing the family.

Willis died in 1982 and she moved south to Vista and then to Oceanside. In May of 2000 she moved to Provo to live in a condominium at Shadowbrook. This move brought her closer to many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her condo and being in Provo. In February of 2007 she moved to Jamestown.

She has three children, nine grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. Throughout her life she has enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, and studying the Bible.

She is a wonderful supportive mother. All the time her children were growing up she kept a beautiful home. She was a great cook that helped her children grow to be strong, healthy, and TALL. She also did all the laundry and then had time to help with homework and school projects, along with attending many games and other activities. Helen loves people and loves living in the beautiful environment at Jamestown.

Special thanks to Kathy & Ernie Muirhead for brightening the day of our Enhanced Care Residents by allowing us to take a ride in their gorgeous 1914 Model T. Ernie himself restored this beauty himself. The residents enjoyed reminiscing about the days when it wasn't uncommon to actually see cars like these on the road!
